Monster Granny!

This pattern is designed for beginners and children who are learning how to crochet.
The pattern is a slightly altered version of the basic granny square.

To make your own Monster Granny you will need:

Small amount of any Yarn (I used Double Knit)
The crochet hook recommended for the weight of yarn you are using (I used a 4mm)
Some felt
Googly eyes
PVA glue

This pattern is written using UK crochet terms. Stitches used are Chain, Treble and Slip stitch.

To begin make a chain of 4 and join with a slip stitch into the first Chain to make a ring.

Chain 3 and crochet 2 Treble stitches into the ring.

Chain 2 and crochet 3 Treble stitches into the ring.

Chain 2 and crochet 3 more Treble stitches into the ring.

Chain 2 and crochet 3 more Treble stitches into the ring.
Join the round with a slip stitch into the top of the chains that you started the round with.

Chain 4 and crochet 3 Trebles into the next Chain 2 space.
Chain 2 and crochet 3 more Trebles into the same space.
Chain 1 and crochet 3 Trebles into the next chain space.
Chain 2 and crochet 3 Trebles into the same chain space.

Chain 1 and crochet 3 Trebles into the next chain space.

Chain 2 and crochet 2 Trebles into the same chain space.
Join the round with a slip stitch into the 3rd chain that you started the round with.

That is the base of the Monster Granny Made!

For the next row and all rows after: Slip stitch along the top of the cluster to get to the next chain space if needed.
Chain 3 and crochet 2 Trebles into the Chain space. Chain 1, Crochet 3 trebles into the next chain space, Chain 1.

Carry on making clusters of 3 Trebles in each space around with 1 Chain in between the clusters. Join each round with a slip stitch into the top of the Chain 3 at the start of the round.

Carry on in this way until you have the size of monster that you want. My monster has 8 more rows.

Nearly there! Now cut out a circle of felt big enough to line your Monster with. Put it inside the body of the Monster and add some toy stuffing to fill it out. Cut out some fangs and a mouth out of white and black felt, glue these on with a little bit of PVA glue (it dries clear so it doesn't matter if it is a bit messy). Pop on some googly eyes to finish the face.

Weave a length of yarn around the gaps at the top of the monster and pull them together, like a draw string. Tie a knot in these lengths of yarn to secure them and push them inside the top of the monster so they are hidden.

Add some tufts of hair if you like, or leave your monster bald.

Now all you have to do is give your Monster Granny a name!

I would love to see a picture of your Monster Granny, you can send me a picture on twitter @hookingcrazy :)
